Government Transportation Research Information Committee Meeting (GTRIC), Sunday June 9 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
The morning program will include an update on the TRIS system (Barbara Post), news on the Midwestern Transportation Library Consortium (Roberto Sarmiento), current and upcoming National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) projects for information services (Sandra Tucker), and an update on what’s new at the National Transportation Library (Nelda Bravo). The afternoon program will feature a training session on using the US Census Department’s Internet products, including: American FactFinder; Censtats; Map Stats; QuickFacts; TIGER & TIGER Map Service Info; Maps Data Extraction System (DES), and Ferret Data. Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority Library Site Visit, Monday June 19 3:00 – 5:00 pm
Join members from the Transportation Division as they visit this unique resource. The Dorothy Peyton Gray Transportation Library (Los Angeles MTA) is one of the most comprehensive transit-related, operator-owned resources of material in the United States. The group will assemble at 3:00 at the Southern California Chapter’s booth. Led by DTRN member Linda Drake, the group will ride the Metro Rail Red Line to Union Station, which is very close to the Library.

Sustainable development, also known as “smart growth” is increasingly promoted as an antidote to urban sprawl that destroys natural areas and promotes dependence on transportation that depends on fossil fuels. A key component is to create an environment that makes nonmotorized transportation – walking and bicycling – a viable means of transportation in the community. Join members from the Transportation and Environment and Natural Resources Divisions, and professionals who plan transportation systems for sustainable communities as they explore this growing trend.
